TEHRAN (FNA)- February 7, 2009 - Iran will not recognize Abkhazia and South Ossetia's independence in the near future as it can cause war in many areas, Iranian ambassador to Russia said on Friday. Reza Sajjadi added defending Russia's measures in the face of Abkhazia and South Ossetia's declaration of independence and the war with Georgia.
He expressed sympathy for the people of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and said Tehran works with Moscow to develop the two areas' economy.
On the new US administration's tendency to engage Iran, the Iranian diplomat said it will be possible if the US pursues an equal and friendly position towards Iran to end the mutual misunderstandings.
The United States should not pursue a hostile policy towards Iran, he concluded.
The United States and Iran broke diplomatic relations in April 1980, after Iranian students seized the United States' espionage center at its embassy in Tehran. The two countries have had tense relations ever since. Washington has ratified a congressional budget and conducted efforts for a regime change in Tehran, but to no avail.
