Linguist Zaira Hewitt’s death marks irreplaceable loss for Abkhazia.

SUKHUM / AQW’A —  Zaira Khiba Hewitt, a respected linguist and translator, passed away on Wednesday, 23 July, in Doncaster, England, following a period of illness. Her death has prompted an outpouring of condolences from Abkhazia and beyond, recognising her enduring contributions to the preservation and promotion of the Abkhaz language and culture.

Together with her husband, renowned scholar Emeritus Professor George Hewitt, Zaira Hewitt co-authored a number of significant academic works, including the two-volume Abkhaz Language, A Handbook for Reading Abkhaz Newspapers, Abkhaz Folk Tales, and The Self-Tuition of the Abkhaz Language. Her scholarly and translation work played a vital role in making Abkhaz linguistic and cultural heritage accessible to a wider audience.

The President of Abkhazia, Badra Gunba, offered his condolences to Professor Hewitt, writing:

“It was with deep sorrow that I learned of your loss. Your family has made a significant contribution to supporting Abkhazia abroad and promoting its scientific and cultural achievements.

In all of this work, Zaira Khiba-Hewitt was your devoted companion. May her memory be eternal.

We mourn with you and offer our support during this difficult time.”

A heartfelt message was also sent by the Rector of Abkhaz State University, Academician Aleko Gvaramia, on behalf of the university and the academic community of Abkhazia.

“It is with profound sorrow that we learned of the passing of your beloved wife Zaira Khiba, an outstanding linguist, talented translator, and a wonderful human being.

Zaira left a bright mark in science, culture, and in the hearts of all who knew her. Her devotion to her native language, her love for Abkhazia, and her tireless work have been an inspiration to many.

All of Abkhazia remembers and cherishes her. Her passing is an irreplaceable loss for all of us.

In these difficult days, we wish you, your family, and loved ones strength, patience, and courage. May the bright memory of Zaira bring warmth to your hearts, and may her legacy live on through her work and her children.”

Zaira Hewitt’s passing marks the loss of not only an accomplished linguist but also a deeply respected advocate for the Abkhaz language and culture. Her intellectual legacy and her quiet determination to serve the people of Abkhazia will long be remembered. She is survived by her husband, Professor George Hewitt, and their two daughters, Amra and Gunda.
