Ghanaian Delegation Visits Abkhazia as Sukhum and Suhum Sign Twin-City Agreement

SUKHUM / AQW'A — Sukhum, the capital of Abkhazia, and the Ghanaian municipality of Suhum have signed an agreement establishing twin-city relations, as part of an official visit by a delegation from Ghana to Abkhazia.

The agreement was signed at the Cabinet of Ministers by Sukhum Mayor Timur Agrba and the traditional ruler of Suhum in Ghana, Barima Amoako Darko. The visit coincided with events marking the 2,510th anniversary of Sukhum.

Welcoming the delegation, Agrba said the agreement gave formal expression to a friendship that both sides hoped to develop further.

“Your presence here in Sukhum is the best confirmation that we are strengthening our ties. You are always welcome guests, and we are proud that our friendship has now been officially sealed by this agreement,” he said.

Frank Danso, deputy head of Suhum in Ghana, thanked the leadership and people of Abkhazia for what he described as a warm reception. He said the Ghanaian delegation had come to present its country’s economic, investment and agricultural potential, including opportunities that could be of interest to local businesspeople.

Barima Amoako Darko also expressed gratitude to the hosts and spoke about the system of land acquisition and use in Ghana. He underlined the delegation’s wish to build lasting relations with Sukhum in Abkhazia.

During the visit, the delegation also met Abkhazia’s Foreign Minister, Oleg Bartsits. According to the Foreign Ministry, the talks focused on prospects for cooperation between Abkhazia and Ghana, as well as Abkhazia’s wider efforts to develop relations with African states.

Bartsits said Abkhazia valued Ghana as a stable African country with significant economic potential and modern infrastructure.

The head of the Ghanaian delegation said the visit was intended to lay the foundations for long-term partnership.

“Having already had the opportunity to see Sukhum, we are impressed by its beauty and unique character,” he said. “Our mission carries deep responsibility. I am convinced that the foundations of this visit were laid by our ancestors. Our arrival is not a one-off event. We are committed to regular exchanges of delegations and long-term coordination of efforts to improve the quality of life of the peoples of the two countries. From now on, Ghana’s doors are open to our Abkhaz brothers.”

At the end of the signing ceremony, the two sides exchanged commemorative gifts. The administration of the Abkhaz capital presented the Ghanaian traditional ruler with a silver drinking horn, a bashlyk and an alabasha, while the guests presented national scarves.
