Abkhazia Marks 33rd Anniversary of Victory and Independence

SUKHUM / AQW'A — Abkhazia marks Victory and Independence Day on 30 September, commemorating 33 years since the end of the 1992–1993 Georgian-Abkhaz war. Memorial ceremonies, a military procession and cultural events are scheduled across the republic.

The country’s principal national holiday brings together veterans, families and communities to remember those who lost their lives and celebrate the end of the war. Veterans gather to recall their experiences, visit graves and honour fallen comrades.

The main commemorations in Sukhum include a flower-laying ceremony at the memorial to those killed in the 1992–1993 Patriotic War of the People of Abkhazia, in the Park of Glory. This will be followed by a ceremonial march by units of the Abkhazian Ministry of Defence and the “Immortal Regiment” procession.

An interactive space created as part of the “Path of the Hero” project, supported by Nizhny Novgorod, is also scheduled to open at the Vladislav Ardzinba State Museum of Military Glory.

Flowers will be laid at the memorials to Abkhazia’s first president, Vladislav Ardzinba, in Lower Eshera, and its second president, Sergei Bagapsh, in the village of Dzhgerda. A celebratory concert at the Razhden Gumba Abkhazian State Philharmonic will feature state performing arts ensembles and Abkhazian popular music artists.

Remembering the End of the War

On 30 September 1993, Abkhazian troops reached the River Ingur and raised the Abkhazian flag, marking the end of a war that had lasted 413 days and nights.

The September offensive, particularly the battle for Sukhum, proved decisive. The operation to retake the capital from Georgian State Council forces lasted 12 days, with several days of fierce fighting inside the city. Following heavy losses in Sukhum, Georgian forces were unable to mount an effective defence in the eastern districts of Abkhazia.

On 28 September, the day after Sukhum was retaken, forces from the Western and Eastern Fronts linked up at the bridge over the River Kodor, near the boundary between Gulripsh and Ochamchira districts. Two days later, Abkhazian forces reached the Ingur.

For families across Abkhazia, the anniversary remains a day of both celebration and mourning, bringing the joy of victory together with remembrance of those who did not return. Commemorative and festive events are planned in towns throughout the republic.
