CIRCASSIAN WORLD: CONGRATULATIONS, REPUBLIC OF ABKHAZIA!

Circassian World follows closely developments affecting the fate of our Abkhazian brothers and lends its strongest support to the struggle for the independence of Abkhazia. Circassian World offers its heartiest congratulations to the Republic of Abkhazia on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of its independence.

ABKHAZIA IS ABKHAZIA!!!

14 August 1992 - Abkhazia declares its sovereignty over its own territory and proposes a federative treaty with Georgia to fill the "legal vacuum" that emerged after Georgia's unilateral abrogation of all Soviet legal documents. Exactly 20 days after being accepted by the United Nations, on August 14, Georgian troops entered the territory of Abkhazia without any notification to the Abkhazian government and launched a land and air attack on the southeast part of Abkhazia and its capital city. Bloody fighting continued for 14 months.

30 September 1993 - Abkhazian forces - backed by the Confederation of the Peoples of the North Caucasus and volunteers from the diaspora Abkhazian community based in Turkey finally ousted the Georgian troops from the territory of Abkhazia.

''...Today some people say that Abkhazia is Russia, others that it is Georgia, while the fact is that Abkhazia is Abkhazia. And at the end of the A 20th century we want to preserve our own identity, our own face for the simple reason that it is ours, even if somebody else may not find it appealing.'' (Stanislav Lakoba, Abkhazia is Abkhazia) London, 23 April 1993)
