Abkhazia’s Economy Presented for the First Time in Iran

SUKHUM / AQW'A — Abkhazia’s economy was presented for the first time at a major business platform in Iran during the 22nd session of the International Council for Business Cooperation of the Chambers of Commerce and Industry of the Caspian Region – “Business Caspian”, held in Tehran on 20–21 October.

The event marked a historic milestone for Abkhazia: it was the first time a delegation from the republic had taken part in a forum of this level in the Islamic Republic of Iran, opening a new chapter in bilateral relations.

The Abkhaz Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI) delegation, represented by Adgur Lushba, a member of the CCI Board, and Naala Basaria, Head of the Department of Foreign Relations and Investments, held meetings with the leadership of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and Agriculture and the Iran–Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce. The discussions focused on practical ways to strengthen trade and economic cooperation.

The Abkhaz representatives outlined current trade relations with Iran and highlighted key export and import areas, emphasising the republic’s favourable geographic position as a strategic advantage for developing trade between the two countries. Issues of logistics and supply chain organisation were also discussed.

The Iranian side expressed keen interest in establishing partnership ties and proposed cooperation across a wide range of export sectors.

During the forum, the Abkhaz delegation met with Iranian entrepreneurs from various industries, as well as with members of the Russian–Iranian Business Council. Additional meetings were held with Russian counterparts, including representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Russian Federation, Astrakhan and Adygea Chambers of Commerce, the Russian Trade Mission in Iran, and the Federal Customs Service.

At a key session on investment and banking, Adgur Lushba presented Abkhazia’s investment potential and gave a brief historical overview highlighting the republic’s longstanding statehood traditions. He underscored Abkhazia’s advantageous economic and geographic location and the favourable conditions for foreign investors.

Plans were also discussed for organising a business mission to Abkhazia, facilitated by the Tehran Chamber of Commerce and the Iran–Russia Joint Chamber of Commerce.

The forum concluded with the adoption of the final declaration of the 22nd session of the “Business Caspian” Council. Notably, Abkhazia was officially invited to this high-level event, which was attended by members of Iran’s Cabinet, including deputy ministers of economy, industry, customs, and trade.

This first-ever visit of an Abkhaz delegation to Iran for such an event has laid a solid foundation for long-term, mutually beneficial economic cooperation. Active engagement with Iranian and Russian partners opens new prospects for Abkhaz entrepreneurs to access one of the most dynamic markets in the region.
