May 18, International Museum Day: Sukhum to Host 'Night at the Museum' Event

SUKHUM / AQW'A ―  In honour of International Museum Day, which is recognised annually on May 18th, the city of Sukhum is set to host the "Night at the Museum" event. This event is being organised by the Ministry of Culture of Abkhazia, providing an opportunity for both residents and visitors of the republic to explore three of the city's museums.

The day's festivities will kick off at the Museum of Military Glory, set to open its doors at 16:00. Visitors can look forward to a vibrant concert featuring performances by the musical and dance ensembles "Rhythms of the Caucasus", "Apsny", "Dioscuria", and "Iairuma". After the concert, attendees will be invited to participate in a quiz.

Meanwhile, the Dmitry Gulia Literary-Memorial Museum will open a photo exhibition at 18:00, marking the 30th anniversary of Victory Day celebrations. The event will also host insightful lectures by Mzia Kvitsinia, a professor at the Abkhaz State University (ASU), on the history of Abkhazia, and ethnologist Marina Bartsits, who will discuss the holy places of the republic. The museum day will conclude with a "Poetic Hour".

The Abkhaz State Museum is set to open two unique exhibitions from 19:00 to 24:00 - "Touching the Past" and "Abkhazian Weaving – Amazing World".

The "Night at the Museum" initiative, an international cultural event, was first introduced in France in 1999. Abkhazia joined the movement in 2015, spearheaded by the State Museum of Abkhazia. This event promises to be a cultural feast for all attendees.
