Premiere of the Play "Asdu" Held at the Abkhaz Drama Theatre

The long-awaited premiere of the theatrical adaptation of Asdu, based on the rhapsodic novel by Alexey Gogua, was staged at the Abkhaz Drama Theatre. Initially scheduled for 12 November, the production faced several postponements due to heightened political tensions in the region. Future performances are set for 21 and 23 November.

The production of Asdu marks a significant cultural event, drawing upon the monumental work of Alexey Gogua, a national writer of Abkhazia. His novel, often translated as Big Snow, is a cornerstone of Abkhaz literature. Since its publication, Asdu has been translated into numerous languages, including those of the former Soviet Union, various European languages, and Japanese. Gogua, born on 15 March 1932, is a recipient of the Dmitry Gulia State Prize in Literature and a Knight of the First Degree "Akhdz-Apsha" Order.

Svetlana Korsaya, the director of the Dmitry Gulia House-Museum and an audience member at the premiere, expressed her joy at seeing the theatre take on this iconic piece. Speaking about the play, she said: "The themes, ideas, and the era depicted in the production resonate strongly with our present time. The arduous journey of our people has been marked by persistent challenges and tragedies, including the alienation of the nation from its homeland."

Korsaya further noted that while discussions often centre on those who left Abkhazia, the stories of those who remained under difficult circumstances are seldom highlighted. She emphasized the enduring relevance of Gogua’s work, which underlines the inseparable bond between the Abkhaz people and their land.

The stage adaptation of Asdu was brought to life under the direction of Madina Argun, with Zanda Kakalia penning the script based on Gogua’s novel. The visual design was led by set designer Nodar Tsvizba, while composer Timur Agrba contributed new musical compositions alongside reimagined arrangements of familiar melodies, enhancing the emotional depth of the play.

Following the premiere, audiences will have additional opportunities to experience the production, with performances scheduled for 21 and 23 November at the Abkhaz Drama Theatre.
