The identity has been established of the person who committed the premeditated murder of Russian diplomat Dmitrii Vishernev and his wife Olga Visherneva
The Republic of Abkhazia Prosecutor General’s Office informed Apsnypress that he turned out to be Yusup Mair-Aliyevich Lakayev, born in 1988 in Grozny and currently resident there, who was sentenced by the Achkhoi-Martan District Court in the Chechen Republic for abetting and participating in an illegal armed formation. He was released from jail on 6 May 2011.
The investigative board of the Republic of Abkhazia Prosecutor General’s Office is continuing to investigate the criminal case of the premeditated murder of the First Secretary of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in Sukhum, Vice-Consul Dmitrii Valeriyevich Vishernev, and of his wife, consular department official Olga Vladimirovna Visherneva, and of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
According to the investigation, at around 8:30 a.m. on 9 September 2013, when D.V. Vishernev and O.V. Visherneva approached the garage they rented in the yard of 52 Nazadze Street in Sukhum, a person whose identity the investigation has failed to establish tried to detonate, with the intention of killing the diplomat and his wife, an improvised explosive device consisting of a five-liter fire extinguisher filled with shrapnel in the form of nails and dowels that was placed near the garage.
Realizing that the device failed to operate, the criminal entered the garage and fired no fewer than five shots from a 9 mm pistol of an unspecified type at D.V. Vishernev and O.V. Visherneva, who were sitting in their official car with diplomatic license plates. He then left the scene of the crime. The diplomat died on the spot from his injuries. His wife was taken to the Republican hospital where she died of gunshot wounds on 14 September 2013 without regaining consciousness.
On 11 September 2013 in accordance with the Protocol on Cooperation between the Russian Federation Investigative Committee and the Republic of Abkhazia Prosecutor General’s Office signed on 2 October 2008 a group of employees of Russia’s Investigative Committee arrived in Abkhazia.
On the basis of operative information from Abkhazia’s Security Service and Interior Ministry and Russia’s FSB, investigators from the Republic of Abkhazia Prosecutor General’s Office and Russia’s Investigative Committee and operatives from Abkhazia’s State Security Service and Interior Ministry and Russia’s FSB organized investigative measures, commissioned and carried out the most complicated kinds of forensic tests in specialized agencies in Russia and the interrogation of persons living on the territory of the Russian Federation.
As a result, during a search by investigators from the Republic of Abkhazia Prosecutor General’s Office of one of the apartments in the building in whose yard the murder was committed various objects were discovered that could have been used in the construction of the improvised explosive device found at the crime scene, and witnesses to the crime were identified and questioned, thanks to whose testimony information was received about the person who committed the crime.

It was established that Yu. M-A. Lakayev fled after committing the crime.
Georgian media report that he was injured and apprehended on 13 September 2013 in Batum (Republic of Georgia) during an exchange of fire with Georgian police.
