Kabardian (Circassian) Volunteer Arsen Efendiev and Polish Volunteer Yanusz Godawa
Probably many of you have seen these pictures taken on September 27, 1993, when Sukhum, the capital of Abkhazia was liberated from the Georgian invaders. Two fighters are carrying the Abkhaz flag to the top of the parliament building but many of us don't know about these two fighters.
The soldiers carrying the Abkhaz flag to the top of the parliament building were volunteers. One from Kabarda (Kabardian) named Arsen Efendiev (nickname Mongol - 34 years old) and other was Janusz Godawa (Godawy - 26 years old), a Polish fighter.
Janusz made the journey from Poland specifically to take part in the conflict. Russian guards confiscated all the gear he had with him when he crossed the border but the Abkhaz forces replaced it.
Arsen and Janusz fought together as brothers-in-arms. They died "together..."
Janusz's body was found in Markhaul village on 30th September. Arsen disappeared without any trace. His family is still looking for him (https://poisk.vid.ru/?p=10&id=2541177).
