Statement from the Press Service for the Ministry for the Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Abkhazia
SUKHUM, ABKHAZIA - On December, 14 the Minister for Foreign Affairs Sergey Shamba held a meeting with the Republic of Nauru delegation headed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Finance of the Republic of Nauru Kiren Keke. The delegation also included: the Vice Chairman of the Parliament of the Republic of Nauru L. Deireragea, the Chairman of the Budget Committee of the Parliament of the Republic of Nauru R. Solomon, the adviser to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nauru B. Sande.
Sergey Shamba welcomed the delegation of the Republic of Nauru and pointed to this visit’s importance. According to the Minister, the Republic of Abkhazia strives for establishing relations with all the states of the world and is open for cooperation. “We have already enlisted support of the biggest country, and now are extremely interested in partnership with the smallest republic on Earth”, the Minister said.
“We aim at building of a legal, democratic state. However global political processes, instead of the real situation influence the process of the republic’s recognition”, Shamba declared.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Nauru, Mr. Keke, on behalf of the delegation expressed special gratitude for hospitality and the extended warm reception. According to Mr. Keke, events in Abkhazia have drawn attention of the Nauru Government which, after having studied the situation deeply, made the decision to establish diplomatic relations with the Republic of Abkhazia and sent a delegation led by the republic’s Minister for Foreign Affairs for this purpose. “We have come to the conclusion that what has happened to you is incorrect”, the Minister said. “The biggest help we can render to you is to recognize independence and to establish diplomatic relations with you”, Keke declared. The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Nauru also expressed readiness to discuss Abkhazia’s problems with the republic’s neighbours in the Pacific ocean.
Sergey Shamba said that now, due to the fact that Abkhazia is not recognized, Russian Federation represents republic’s interests on foreign policy arena whom a number of agreements, including, the Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Aid Treaty and the Agreement on Strategic Partnership has been concluded with this year. According to the Minister, the possibility of Nauru lobbying interests of our republic in the Pacific region is extremely significant and Abkhazia is extremely interested in it.
The delegation once again thanked for warm reception, expressed hopes of further cooperation and invited a delegation of Abkhazia to visit the Republic of Nauru.
At the end of the meeting, Sergey Shamba handed over memorable gifts to the guests and expressed gratitude for the shown interest and support.
