Advisory Only: Officials Clarify Stance on Proposed School Suspensions
SUKHUM / AQW’A — The Cabinet of Ministers in Abkhazia clarified that the proposed suspension of educational activities in schools and kindergartens, initially suggested as a measure to address heating challenges during the ongoing energy crisis, is advisory rather than mandatory. This announcement follows recommendations issued by the Republican Headquarters for Energy Security on 9 December 2024.
According to the government’s press service, local administrations have the autonomy to decide on educational arrangements, considering the technical readiness of institutions and the severity of electricity supply disruptions in their respective areas. “The heads of city and district administrations may independently decide on the mode of educational activities, taking into account the technical readiness of schools and kindergartens under unstable electricity conditions,” the statement read.
Reports on social media suggest that the government has opted against declaring an early holiday for schools and kindergartens, with decisions left to regional discretion. This clarification comes as Abkhazia continues to grapple with tightened electricity outage schedules and critical energy shortages.
Yesterday, Acting Education Minister Inal Gabliya proposed a one-week suspension of educational activities from 11 to 17 December to alleviate heating challenges in schools and kindergartens. However, the latest statement emphasizes the advisory nature of the proposal, leaving flexibility for regional administrations to adapt as needed.
