SUKHUM / AQW'A -- The Ministry of Health of Abkhazia has recorded a steady decline in new cases of coronavirus-infection in Abkhazia since 24 January.

The Russian Sputnik V coronavirus-vaccine is expected to arrive in February-March, MP Alkhas Dzhindzholia said at a meeting of Parliament on Wednesday the 3 February.

"We submitted our first application in late summer-early autumn but for various reasons did not receive this vaccine. In this regard, we shall hold a meeting of the health committee, and we shall address a letter to our colleagues from the State Duma in order somehow to speed up this process," he stressed.

Dzhindzholia also noted that the Sputnik V vaccine is a proven product.

Abkhazia requested a consignment of Sputnik V vaccine against coronavirus-infection from Russia at the end of September 2020. It was reported that the republic expects to receive a batch of 15 - 20 thousand doses of the vaccine.

Russia's Sputnik V coronavirus vaccine gives around 92% protection against Covid-19, late-stage trial results published in The Lancet revealed. It has also been deemed to be safe - and offer complete protection against hospitalisation and death.
