SUKHUM / AQW’A —  The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Abkhazia has registered an initiative group supporting the nomination of Member of Parliament Kan Kvarchia as a presidential candidate.

Members of the initiative group must collect a minimum of 2,000 and a maximum of 2,500 signatures from voters.

The registration period for initiative groups and political parties will remain open until 6 January, after which the presidential candidates will be registered within a 10-day timeframe.

Previously, the CEC registered six other initiative groups supporting the presidential candidacies of Acting President Badra Gunba, member of the Supreme Council of the World Abkhaz-Abaza Congress Oleg Bartsyts, leader of the Republican Public Organisation 'Abkhaz People's Movement' Adgur Ardzinba,  former First Deputy Prime Minister of Abkhazia Shamil Adzinba, former head of the Audit Chamber Robert Arshba and Chairman of the Black Sea Development Bank Adgur Khurkhumal.

Kan Kvarchia, leader of the opposition civic organisation 'Aidgylara,' Member of Parliament, and former acting mayor of Sukhum, has been making headlines in Abkhazia. On 19 December, he was injured in a shooting at the parliament building carried out by his colleague, Adgur Kharazia. Another MP, Vakhtangi Golandziya, tragically lost his life in the incident. Kvarchia, who was hospitalised following the attack, was discharged just a few days ago.

The early presidential election is scheduled for 15 February.
