Council of Elders and Coordination Council Demand Parliamentary Action
SUKHUM / AQW’A — The Council of Elders and the Coordination Council for Resolving the Political Crisis have issued a joint appeal urging members of the People’s Assembly (Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia) to take immediate action to stabilise the situation and protect the country’s statehood.
The joint statement emphasised that the Parliament, as the sole legitimate legislative body of Abkhazia, holds historical responsibility for stabilising political crises and addressing complex political challenges.
The full statement reads:
Appeal to the Deputies of the People's Assembly - Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia
"The People's Assembly - Parliament of the Republic of Abkhazia, as the country’s legislative body representing the interests of Abkhazia's multiethnic population, has historically taken necessary measures to stabilise political situations and address complex political challenges.
However, three days into the current political crisis in Abkhazia, the Parliament's voice remains absent from public discourse.
In times of socio-political crisis, the people of Abkhazia place great hope in their elected representatives to mediate disagreements among the country's political factions and find resolutions.
As the sole legitimate institution of the Republic, the Parliament of Abkhazia must assume full responsibility for safeguarding the present and future of Abkhazian statehood.
We call on each deputy, elected by the people and entrusted with the authority to represent the interests of Abkhazian citizens in their relations with the Republic’s government, to return to their posts in the Parliament building. Regardless of party or political affiliation, they must apply their full efforts, knowledge, and authority to make the right decisions in the name of preserving the statehood of the Republic of Abkhazia.
Council of Elders of the Republic of Abkhazia
Coordination Council for Resolving the Political Crisis
The Council of Elders in Abkhazia is a traditional advisory body rooted in the country’s historical governance. Historically, councils made up of free peasants, not nobles or princes, held decision-making power in rural communities. These councils ensured inclusive governance, and their decisions were respected by all social classes. Today, the Council of Elders continues this legacy, providing guidance and acting as a stabilising force during political crises.
