A powerful earthquake that struck near the town of Gaziantep in south-eastern Turkey near the Syrian border in the early hours of Monday has claimed the lives of nearly 16,000 people and left thousands injured. The quake, which was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one that was nearly as intense as the initial shock, has caused widespread destruction in the affected area.
