SUKHUM / AQW'A ―  Today, Abkhazia commemorates the 31st anniversary of its most significant national holiday, Victory and Independence Day. Marking 31 years since the conclusion of the Georgian-Abkhazian War, this day honours the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought for the republic’s freedom. Citizens and veterans alike come together to reflect on the events of three decades past, visiting memorials and paying tribute to fallen comrades.

On this day, 31 years ago, on September 30, 1993, the soldiers of the Abkhazian army reached the banks of the Ingur River, triumphantly raising the national flag. After 413 days and nights of intense conflict, the war ended with the complete liberation of Abkhazia from the forces of Georgia’s State Council. The victory followed the decisive September offensive in Sukhum, where fierce fighting for 12 days ultimately freed the capital. Georgian forces, significantly weakened after the battle for Sukhum, were unable to defend the remaining occupied eastern regions of Abkhazia.

Across Abkhazia, families celebrate this day with a mix of joy and solemn remembrance. The anniversary is a deeply emotional occasion for many, as nearly every household was touched by the war. While the victory is celebrated, there is also reflection on the loss and sacrifice that came with the conflict.

The day’s commemorative events began with a flower-laying ceremony at the Memorial for the Fallen in Sukhum’s Park of Glory at 10:00 AM. This was followed by a parade of veterans and the "Immortal Regiment." Other activities throughout the day include a bicycle rally, and floral tributes at the memorials of the First and Second Presidents of Abkhazia, Vladislav Ardzinba and Sergey Bagapsh, located in the villages of Lower Eshera and Dzhgarda. Celebrations will conclude with a series of festive concerts, including performances at the R. Gumba Abkhaz State Philharmonic at 5:00 PM and on the Mahadzhir Embankment at 7:00 PM. The festivities will end with a fireworks display at 8:30 PM.

Victory and Independence Day remains one of the most significant dates in Abkhazian history, commemorating the end of the Georgian-Abkhazian War and the perseverance of the Abkhazian people in securing their freedom.
