Testing for the coronavirus infection did not reveal any new cases of the disease in the republic over the past day.

SUKHUM -- Over the past day, eight people underwent testing for coronavirus in Abkhazia. All test results were negative, according to the Operational Headquarters for the Protection of the Population from Coronavirus.

The total number of identified patients with coronavirus in Abkhazia during the pandemic is 35 people. Of these, 27 people recovered, and one patient passed away. Currently, there are 7 active cases in the Gudauta District Hospital.

The highest daily increase in worldwide coronavirus cases yet was recorded on Sunday, with 136,000 new cases confirmed, World Health Organization (WHO) director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told journalists yesterday.

Since first being recorded late last year in China, the COVID-19 coronavirus has spread around the world and been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization. The pandemic has sickened more than 7.2 million people worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University Coronavirus Resource Center. As of Wednesday morning, at least 412,013 people had died, and the virus had been detected in nearly every country.
